250,000 Americans Call on Obama Administration to Take Immediate Action to Help End Darfur Genocide

‘Darfur from Day One' Update: Arrest warrant for Sudanese president looms, administration must appoint Sudan envoy

WASHINGTON – To mark the 25th day of the Obama administration, the Save Darfur Coalition last week delivered more than 250,000 signatures from American activists calling on President Obama to fulfill his promise to pursue an end to the Darfur genocide with "unstinting resolve." Actress Maria Bello and Darfuri refugees living in the United States delivered the names during a National Security Council meeting. The following organizational partners contributed to this effort: American Jewish World Service, Amnesty International USA, Conservative Judaism, Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy, Genocide Intervention Network, Jewish World Watch, the NAACP, Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition, STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition and Union for Reform Judaism.

The Darfur from Day One campaign is working to ensure that the new administration is making Darfur a priority from day one of their term. With the impending International Criminal Court arrest warrant for Sudanese President al-Bashir likely to be issued in the coming days, the Save Darfur Coalition urges the administration to swiftly appoint a high-level Sudan envoy with the stature, mandate and authority to pursue peace in Sudan.
