Stand with the Women of Sudan

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.  Each year on March 8th, people across the globe come together to honor women and to work for their safety and equality.

As part of the Save Darfur Coalition’s ongoing advocacy efforts to combat the sexual violence in Sudan and provide comprehensive services to survivors, we invite you to take this opportunity to spread the word about the incredible women of Sudan and to advocate for their protection and rights.

What: International Women’s Day celebrations and events

When: Monday, March 8, 2010 (or surrounding days)

Where: Local communities around the world, including yours!

What you can do:

• Write a letter your elected officials, or contact your Senators and Representative through our website form, where you can ask them to urge Secretary of State Clinton to prioritize the restoration of Gender-Based Violence and other “life-saving” sectors like protection and food security in Darfur
• Host a special meal at your house, using traditional Sudanese recipes
• Screen a film about the violence against women taking place in Sudan – check out our discussion guide
• Support the Women’s Peace Collection, featuring baskets made by displaced Darfuri women
• Design your own activity! Check out creative ideas for advocacy and action highlighted during the recent 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence and read our staff blogs about taking the actions
• Note: All of these ideas can be combined! Why not host a special Sudanese meal for your friends and family, where you watch the violence against women video – and then write letters to your Congressional representatives together?
