In the month of April we will commemorate genocides such as Armenia, The Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, South Sudan and other mass atrocities with a Month of Sermons and Service. Congregations around the country will reflect on Darfur during Mass, Church Services, Seders and Khutbahs.
The Month of Sermons and Service is a time to not only remember the inaction of world leaders in the face of past atrocities, but also to demand real action in Darfur in the present. Invite your faith community to participate by registering as a Congregation of Conscience and hosting or attending an event in your community.
Congregations interested in adding a service component to their Darfur advocacy have a variety of options. One great way to help Darfuris in the United States is to locate a nonprofit in your area that works with newly relocated refugees. Refugees immigrating to the United States need help with adjusting to their new environment. Your congregation can help by providing English training, assistance in finding a job, babysitting and other basics (like how to use a phone). Visit USCRI to find opportunities in your area. Additionally, you can support the women in the internally displaced persons camps by purchasing handmade Amber Chand Baskets of Strength or sending solar cookers to the camps through Jewish World Watch.
