Wyoming Cares About Darfur

Wyoming HS Darfur Group
During World War II, Nazi Germany and their collaborators exterminated approximately six million Jews and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. said “that while the world kept silent, this will never happen again.” A Holocaust museum has been erected in Washington DC. and we all vowed: Never Again. Then, in 1994, in 100 day period, approximately 800,000 Rwandan people, which accounted for 11 percent of the total population, were brutally slaughtered. And the world said” If We Only Knew” we would have intervened and stopped this genocide. Wyoming High Students, as well as thousands of other high school students from across the US. are saying to us that “Now You Know” for the Genocide is taking place presently in Darfur, Sudan. What have we learned from previous genocide, and, with three years into the killing in Sudan, it appears that it has not made an impact in this genocide. It is for the millions of Darfur refugees in the camps whose relatives have been killed, whose communities have been destroyed, and who, many will never return home. These desperate people are now our concern. The world is three years too late to save many of their relatives and neighbors. Here at home, going to school, working, and attempting to pay some attention to domestic and international news. A tragedy like the genocide in Darfur can all too easily escape our attention or concern as it is easy not to feel a direct connection to what is happening. Remember, that genocide is the ultimate crime against humanity. As high school students in Wyoming, Ohio we can and will make a difference.
