William S. Hart High School: We Hart Darfur

Currently in Darfur, the western region of Sudan, a massacre is taking place against the Darfuri citizens. 2 million people have been displaced from their homes, 400,000 men, women, and children have been killed, and 3.5 million are now solely reliant on international aid. Embroiled in a deadly conflict for over three years, Sudan's problems officially when two rebel groups mainly located in Darfur, the SLA and JEM, began to attack political outposts. In response, the government began to support a militant force, the Janjaweed. Pillaging towns, raping women and children, and killing civilians, the groups' motives are backed by the current and deadly political strife in the area.

WE HART DARFUR is an organization backed by the Save Darfur Coalition, which aims to aid the victims of this tragic conflict and raise public awareness about the issue. The Coalition has been in the news most recently through George Clooney and his efforts to advocate the cause as well as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. WE HART DARFUR was created by two Hart High School students, Pilar Kearney and Kelli Crescenti, in an effort to compete with other high schools in the Save Darfur Coalition's "Dollars for Darfur" challenge. For this reason, the money donated must be credited to William S. Hart High School. All funds raised will go directly to the Save Darfur Coalition. Half of the money raised will fund humanitarian efforts for Darfuri refugees and the other half will fund the advocacy efforts of the Save Darfur Coalition, which will help to pass peace-keeping legislation.
