Pittsburgh Save Darfur Olympic Torch Relay (Olympic Dream for Darfur Event)
UPDATED AS OF 10/3/07: The Pittsburgh Save Darfur Olympic Torch Relay will start at the Holocaust Memorial in front of the Robinson Wing of the Jewish Community Center, 5738 Darlington Road, in Squirrel Hill at 8:00 A.M. on Columbus Day, Monday, October 8, 2007. JACK SITTSAMER, PRESIDENT OF THE HOLOCAUST SURIVORS ORGANIZATION, DAVID ROSENBERG AND ANNA THROPE OF PDEC, JESSICA GOLD AND AMITTE ROSENFELD OF TAYLOR ALLDERDICE STAND, AND PENNSYLVANIA STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAN FRANKEL A SUPPORTER OF HB 1140 THE SUDAN DIVESTMENT ACT, WILL SPEAK AND RUN THE FIRST LEG OF THE RELAY. The torch will be carried through Squirrel Hill (LEAVES 9 AM) and (HILLEL JEWISH UNIVERSITY CENTER 9;15 AM) Oakland , THRU HOMEWOOD (YMCA 10 A.M.), THRU EAST LIBERTY (STOPPING AT KINGSLEY ASSOCIATION (C. 10:15), past Schenley High School about 10:30 A.M. through the Hill District on Centre Avenue to Wylie Avenue(NAACP Hq. around 10:45 A.M., then to Freedom Corner (11:00 a.m.)Freedom Corner, to Duquesne University (11:15 a.m.)-- and then downtown. Concluding ceremonies on steps of City Council Building at 11:30 a.m. POLICE CHIEF HARPER WILL RUN THE LAST LEG FROM DUQUENSE TO CITY COUNTY BUILDING. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will join already committed government leaders including Congressman Mike Doyle, State Rep. Dan Frankel, Councilman Bill Peduto, COUNCILWOMAN TONYA PAYNE, NAACPT PITTSBURGH PRESIDENT M. GAYLE MOSS, URBAN LEAGUE PRESIDENT ESTHER BUSH and others. REP. DAN FRANKEL WILL RUN THE FIRST LEG. THE TORCH WILL BE LET AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE RELAY.En route there will be "stages" (gathering points MENTIONED ABOVE) where supporters can assemble and cheer the runners on. Please sign up for this event and also indicate whether you would like to be a runner-torch carrier. (Don't feel obliged to participate as a runner. Cheering from the sidelines or at the closing ceremonies at City County building is perfectly fine.) The previous day, i.e. Sunday, October 7 in the morning, the torch will be brought to Pittsburgh in preparation for the October 8 Relay. Details of this part are being worked out.


The Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition -- http://www.pittsburghdarfur.org -- will work to make this a success in our area. We invite the collaboration of individuals and organizations.

Directions: Beginning of Torch Relay at 8 a.m. is in Squirrel Hill on Darlington Road one block south of the intersection of Forbes and Murray Avenues. The end point of the Relay and concluding ceremonies are at the steps of City County Building at 11:30-12 noon.
: Olympic Dream for Darfur official events in the US are organized by the Save Darfur Coalition, STAND, and the Dream for Darfur. They feature a torch that started its journey in Chad, just across the border from Darfur, will continue to the sites of previous genocides, several cities in the US, and arrive at China's doorstep in December.
