SF Bay Area Dream for Darfur Rally, Symbolic Torch Relay and Die-In (Olympic Dream for Darfur Event)
Dream for Darfur Rally, Symbolic Torch Relay, & Die-in
The "Dream for Darfur" events are travelling around the U.S. to tell China: "Stop Fueling the Darfur Genocide NOW". Sunday, November 18, 2007 is the day for the voices of Californians to be heard. In the SF Bay Area: Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland, California @ 10:00am.
Rain or shine.
At 10AM, survivors and descendants of victims of 20th century genocides (Armenians, The Holocaust, Nanjing, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Southern Sudan) will lead participants in a walk along a path lined with the names of Darfuri refugee and internally displaced persons camps handing a symbolic Olympic torch from one to the next, with the last hand-off to Mohamed Suleiman, a Darfuri, representing the Darfur genocide now in its fifth year. Congresswoman Barbara Lee will deliver a brief keynote address, Mohamed Suleiman will deliver the message of Darfuris to China, and Nikki Serapio will speak on behalf of the SF Bay Area Darfur Coalition. The event will conclude with a die-in: hundreds of event participants will lie down and hold a moment of silence to recognize and remember the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in Darfur, and Rabbi Lee Bycel, West Coast Executive Director of American Jewish World Service will lead a prayer for peace.
Getting there: The plaza is between 14th and 15th streets on Broadway, at the 12th St. Oakland BART stop (Frank H. Ogawa Plaza exit).
