Save Darfur Coalition: Testimony & Advocacy Event (Act Now for Darfur)
On the afternoon of Sunday, April 19, 2009, the Save Darfur Coalition will bring survivors from past genocides and mass atrocities, including Darfur, South Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia, the Holocaust, and Armenia, together with faith leaders, leading anti-genocide advocates, and local activists to reflect on these atrocities and call on President Obama to Act Now For Darfur.

The event will begin with a memorial ceremony by survivors to honor the lives that have been lost. In commemoration of the victims of these atrocities, the survivors, speakers and all attendees will be able to add personal objects to a memorial constructed specifically for this event. This memorial will be a powerful and symbolic call to President Obama to take notice.

Following the ceremony there will be a short speaking program featuring individuals who have been "upstanders" in the face of genocide. These individuals have been leaders in the movement to end genocide.

Speakers include:

Carl Wilkens
Director of World Outside My Shoes, the only American to stay in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.

Jon Western
Former Balkans and East European Specialist at the U.S. Department of State, Professor

John Prendergast
Co-founder of the Enough Project

Jerry Fowler
President of the Save Darfur Coalition

Mohammed Yahya
President of the Damanga Coalition and Darfuri Leader

Fatima Haroun

Rabbi Steve Gutow
President of the Jewish Council on Public Affairs

Rev. Dr. Gloria White-Hammond

Music will be provided by Themba Mawoko from Zimbabwe on the marimbas and Verity Norman from South Africa on the violin.

The program will highlight the importance and power of "standing up", the Darfur movement as part of the broader anti-genocide movement, and the potential to effect change by acting at this moment in history.
