Dear Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder,

We know you personally do not support the genocide in Darfur or want to profit from the suffering of others.

We also have great respect for Warren Buffett. In the words of Marc Gunther of Fortune,

“Warren Buffett is, after all, much more than one of the world's great investors. He is a decent, generous man of unquestioned integrity.” (CNN Money, April 18, 2007)

The success of our work to end the genocide in Darfur is dependent in part on people like you and Warren Buffett, good-hearted people who want to do the right thing.

We have highlighted Berkshire Hathaway as part of our Divest for Darfur campaign because Berkshire Hathaway is the largest holder of publicly traded stock in PetroChina, a Chinese oil company that through its parent company is considered to be one of the worst offenders in helping to fund the genocide in Darfur. China is the largest purchaser of Sudan’s oil and an estimated 70 percent of its oil revenue goes to the Sudanese military, which is responsible for the genocide in Darfur.

There are three things you can do:

  1. Educate yourself. Learn how Berkshire Hathaway’s investments in PetroChina are connected with the genocide in Darfur. A good place to start is with our FAQ. The Sudan Divestment Task Force has recently released a report about PetroChina and Berkshire Hathaway.
  2. Speak your mind. Let Berkshire Hathaway management know how you feel about these investments. The address for the company is:

    BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY INC.
    1440 Kiewit Plaza
    Omaha, NE 68131

    berkshire@berkshirehathaway.com

  3. Talk to us. Let us know what you think of the campaign and how you want to be involved. Send us a note at divest@savedarfur.org or call (202) 478-6173. We would like to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for your concern about this issue. You are a key partner in helping Berkshire Hathaway become the company it could be, and ending the genocide in Darfur.

Sincerely,

Zahara Heckscher
