February School of the Month

February’s School of the Month is Jefferson High School of Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia.

Jefferson High set a goal to raise $1,000 by the end of the school year. They've already raised $1,500!

Their main fundraiser was a production of Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark, a play by Ariel Dorfman about international human rights. Before the play, members of the theater department sold t-shirts, distributed fliers, spoke with people about the genocide, and attended a Prayer for Peace.

To increase the educational value of the production, the school hosted a panel discussion about human rights with representatives from Amnesty International.

The West Virginia Theatre Conference honored the students for their creativity and their global vision. Students also performed part of the play for a group of Iraqi diplomats visiting the U.S. investigating ways to rejuvenate art and education in Iraq.

Their production of Speak Truth to Power inspired the creation of a Human Rights Awareness club at their school. One student was moved enough to create a short video about the genocide.
