Lobby Your Member of Congress
Almost three years ago, the United States Congress declared that genocide was occurring in Darfur, Sudan. We need to keep their attention on the suffering in Darfur and how the United States can help bring it to an end.
Congress is crucial in approving funds for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Darfur, as well as implementing sanctions against the Sudanese government. Our representatives in Washington have the opportunity to lead as public advocates for Darfur should they choose to take it.
CURRENT LEGISLATION:
The Darfur Accountability and Divestment Authorization Act, a bill allowing states to divest from countries that are helping to fund Sudan’s military, passed the U.S. House by a vote of 418-1 on July 31st.
Now it’s the Senate’s turn. Tell your senator to support the Senate divestment legislation, the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007. For more info on the bill, please see the One page fact sheet on the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Sign the Divestment Legislation Petition
You can also support your fellow activists in speaking out for the people of Darfur by joining a lobby meeting in your community. If there are currently no meetings planned in your area, we hope you will consider setting up your own lobby meeting.
If you can not set up or participate in a lobby meeting, consider dropping off a One page fact sheet on the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007 to your member of Congress.
