New Year's Resolution

I wanted to make doing all I can for Darfur my New Year's resolution this year. There is a great deal to do to help. So far I have called the senators and representatives of Nebraska and sent two postcards to Senator Chuck Hagel (R) and Congressman Lee Terry asking them to make SAVING DARFUR their top priority. I have not gotten a response back. Usually they send a reply by mail stating their efforts and stance on the issue. I have also tried to educate myself on the divestment efforts and the role China plays. I really do think the we should not plan to participate in the Olympics if China cannot move the government in Khartoum to stop the genocide. I do wonder why we aren't including that move in our strategy. It seems that by doing so, we will give a strong voice to help those in Darfur. If anyone can answer why boycotting the Olympics is not currently on the agenda I'd appreciate a response. The realm of International Affairs is sometimes beyond my understanding.

New Sanctions against considered weak by the Sudanese goverment.

Well, the plan B doesn't make any different at all according to Sudan goverment we need to push president bush to do more than that. They're sending us a clear message that the sanction won't stop killing in Darfur.

June 4, 2007 (KHARTOUM) -- Business leaders managing Sudan's economic boom predict the new U.S. sanctions imposed because of Darfur will have little impact on this country's oil-based economy, mostly because they avoid targeting key Chinese interests here.

Chinese President Hu Jintao shakes hands with his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Beshir. (AFP)The US measures and the violence in Darfur are likely to be topics when the Group of Eight industrialised countries meet this week at a summit in Germany.

US President George Bush has directed American officials to meet with allies to try to draft a new United Nations Security Council resolution that would impose multilateral pressure on Sudan, in addition to the unilateral actions by the US.

But China has urged negotiations rather than sanctions as the best way to elicit co-operation from Sudan, and holds veto power in the Security Council.

That has again highlighted China's central role in the Darfur issue.

The US sanctions announced last week target 31 Sudanese companies and three individuals - the military intelligence chief, a cabinet minister and a rebel leader linked to the Darfur violence that has killed 200 000 people and forced 2,5 million from their homes.

The newly sanctioned companies join 132 other Sudanese firms already banned from doing business with any US company or bank.

But Abdul Rahim Hamdi, a former Sudanese finance minister who advises the Sudanese government on economic matters, said the US sanctions mostly avoid the most critical parts of Sudan's economy - oil and the oil sector's Chinese customers.

Last year, Sudan's economy grew by 12 percent, according to the International Monetary Fund. That growth was propelled by the estimated 500 000 barrels of oil produced each day - two-thirds of them bought by China.

Hamdi noted that only Sudanese oil-drilling companies are on the new US sanctions list, not Chinese or other foreign corporations - some of which pay huge royalties to the Sudanese government.

"The Chinese companies are the only big players, but the Americans have carefully avoided targeting them," Hamdi said.

US authorities have defended the new measures, saying they not only broaden the target list but also provide better methods to track down embargo evaders.

"Tougher new enforcement techniques," including "forensic accounting" have been used to select the newly targeted companies and to make sure all 163 now on the sanctions list are truly barred from the dollar economy, US embassy spokesperson Joel Maybury said.

US officials also dispute the idea that they are leery of disrupting Chinese relations over Darfur.

"We can very definitely say that the issue of Sudan is on the United States-China bilateral agenda," US under Secretary of State John Negroponte told reporters last week.

However, some Sudanese officials say privately that they believe the White House is unwilling to drive up world oil prices by targeting the shipping companies that export the country's oil production.

For now, the only Sudanese company that truly risks being affected by the US measures, Hamdi contends, is Sudatel, Sudan's largest cellphone provider, because it is listed on the stock exchange in the United Arab Emirates and is largely owned by foreign investors.

After a decade of American sanctions, Sudan has few commercial ties to the United States at this point, meaning the effect of US sanctions is fairly limited, both Hamdi and outside analysts say.

Nearly three-quarters of Sudan's trade is with Arab and Asian nations, Hamdi said.

"We have learned years ago to avoid the American banking system. I don't think anybody will be hurt by this," he said.

A prominent Khartoum financier, who asked not be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, said Sudanese firms know how to steer clear of dollar transactions by using the euro currency instead.

Sudanese firms operate through foreign holding companies or joint ventures to evade restrictions, the financier said.

Analysts like Alex Vines, the head of the Africa programme at the British think tank Chatham House, also predicted the US sanctions will have little actual effect on Sudan's economy.

"It's more of a political signal," Vines said.

Flyers need to be handed out!! Thank you Edgar!!

We have thousands of beautifully done flyers ready to be distributed tomorrow and early Sunday!! These look like something only a corporation would be able to afford!! They will be at my house, sitting on my front porch. If you are interested, email or message me and I will give you my address. Take as many as you can hand out!

Edgar, those flyers were WAY above and beyond anything we could have expected or hoped for. They are absolutely beautiful! We are handing as many out as we possibly can! I just wanted to personally thank you. That was an awesome gesture of help!!
Peace,

Special heartfelt thank you and prayer for Eric Reeves

www.sudanreeves.org - please go check out this massive wealth of information !!
Professor Eric Reeves has devoted over nine years - fulltime, to research, writings, and strong activism on the atrocities in Darfur and South Sudan. This has literally become his life's passion.
He is currently battling leukemia, and has since 2003 - yet his international fight continues amidst his internal fight with this disease.
Please check out this wonderful man's work/articles - he is an acclaimed author and has testified many times before Congress on the genocide ongoing.
He has been so kind in responding to many emails and has given us a personal statement to be read at our rally (I will save it until then).
Please pray for his health and continued work for the people of Sudan.

EXCITING NEWS! WE HAVE OUR 1ST SPEAKER! DR. DAVID CHAND!

I just got off the phone with Dr. David Chand, UNO Associate Professor (extremely powerful force for the Sudanese here in Omaha!!), and he has agreed to speak at the event on June 3, 2007!!!! I am so excited! Please spread the word. We are still waiting to hear from a few other people that have been invited, so stay tuned! Thank you all! His bio is right below, along with the current info on the Berkshire Hathaway meeting regarding disvestment:

Dr Chand bio:
Dr. David Chand, Associate Professor, University of Nebraska at Omaha - Dr. Chand is currently teaching at the University of Nebraska at Omaha as an Associate Professor of Political Science. Prior to that, he served as the Executive Director of the South Sudan Institute of Peace and Development (SSIPD) in South Sudan (1999-2001) and was the Ambassador and Director of Peace and Human Rights Department for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khartoum (1997-99). Dr. Chand is a founding member of South Sudan Independence Movement/Army (SSIM/A), a member of the National Liberation Council (NLC) (1994) and Member of the UDSF Central Committee (1998). He was the Spokesman and Director of External Affairs of SSIM/A (now UDSF) from 1995-98 and served as the Representative of SSIM/A (formerly SPLA-United) to the United Nations and the Americas from 1991-94. As a member of SSIM, Dr. Chand took part in the Inter-Governmental Authority (IGAD) I, II, and II & IV Peace Talks and participated in the South-South Dialogue on peace and Unity of Purpose held in Nairobi, Kenya in December 2000.

Update on Berkshire Hathaway Meeting regarding divestment in China Petro-China holdings: (unfortunately not going very well at this time)

12:58 p.m.

Before today's annual Berkshire Hathaway meeting, an adjunct professor of international studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha urged Buffett to sell Berkshire's investments in PetroChina.

David Chand said he is a former diplomat from Sudan, and he helps the Sudanese refugee community in Omaha in their efforts to learn English and study trades with skills that can be used in the United States. Chand said about 8,000 Sudanese refugees live in Omaha.

Chand said oil money contributes to the killing in Sudan, and Berkshire Hathaway should sell its investments in PetroChina. Chand says Berkshire also should consider financially helping the Sudanese community in Nebraska. Chand says Berkshire and other companies would be welcome investors in Sudan once that country establishes an equitable peace.

Chand said he is not a stockholder in Berkshire.

12:48 p.m.

A proposal that would require Berkshire to sell its $2.3 billion stake in PetroChina appears headed to a sound defeat. Early tallies show shareholders rejecting the idea with 98 percent against and about 2 percent for.

People concerned about reported genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan have asked Berkshire to sell its PetroChina holdings because PetroChina is a unit of a Chinese company that does oil business in Sudan.

Buffett says he voted against the resolution, but he urged people to discuss the issue at more length at about 3:15 this afternoon, when the business part of the annual meeting will take place.

Buffett says PetroChina does not do business in Sudan, and PetroChina has no say over the actions of its parent company. Buffett says the Chinese government controls the parent company.

A coalition of groups has argued that investing in PetroChina contributes to the Chinese government's support of the Sudanese government.

It's a shame that it takes celebrities to move the leaders in situations like this, but whatever it takes to stop the killing - go for it!
Here's an article I read this morning. Take a moment to read it... in times like these, I say "GO HOLLYWOOD"!! If there's anyway we could publicly thank them, let me know, and I'll do it! Sheila

I'm so sorry. I help plan a meeting and then I don't go. My family called right before I left to let me know my uncle passed away. He didn't wake up from a nap. It was very sudden. My dad is very sad (his brother).
I left this meeting in everyone else's hands and couldn't get a hold of anyone. I'm so sorry everyone. I'm going to have to get better contact info. Argh....

Kudos To Kelsey in Lincoln

This precious teenager (Senior '07, yay) has been personally making "awareness" bracelets to help people remember every day, the genocide in Darfur! No one has asked her to do this, this was her own idea. She has used her own money to do this. She has had quite a few difficulties in being allowed to sell them at her school, so keep her in your thoughts... we'll help ya kiddo! She doesn't know I'm posting this, but actions like this should be recognized! Thank you Kelsey. You have the passion we all need.
