Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness
A grassroots coalition working to raise awareness of genocides past and present and to work towards stopping, preventing and healing from genocide.

I am looking for people in the Portland Oregon area that are willing to spent any amount of time passing out flyers and putting up posters for a presentation I am giving on the 24th. Please send me a message or an e-mail to Adrien2690@hotmail.com.
Thank you.
When I first started speaking about Darfur there were odd looks and whispers. I interviewed person after person that had no idea what Darfur even was. I had guesses like, "a sports team" and "I really have been busy lately and have not seen the news". These reactions hurt me, I felt as if my country failed its citizens in informing them about one of the most important events in the past hundred years.

People ask me why I Give these presentations on Darfur and what is happening. They ask what i am getting out of it, It took me a long time to come up with a responce to that, but i did. Now when i am asked that I simply look at them and say "Nothing, I get absolutely nothing out of helping these people. Except when this is all over I will be able to sit back in my couch and smile knowing that i Changed the world. And you will not." I feel for the people of Darfur. They really are wonderful people. That is something that I cant say about Americans. I wish i could switch places with a refugee, I would do it in a second. I wish others would feel this way as well.

If I could change one thing about the people in this country I would change how Arrogant we are. We claim to be world leaders, yet when it comes time to save a country... We FALL FLAT ON OUR FACES!

Hi Everyone,

The Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness is screening "Screamers"

Where: Peace House 2116 NE 18th

When: Saturday, May 10th

Come at 7:00 pm to talk and share in light food and appetizers (feel free to bring a simple snack or dessert) the movie will start at 7:30

Bring a Friend and Stay for a discussion of the movie after the screening.

"SCREAMERS" A Movie about Genocide Featuring Music by System Of A Down

Producer/director Carla Garapedian (Zarmina: Lifting the Veil, Children of the Secret State, Iran Undercover) is taking on another heavy topic with her latest documentary Screamers. The movie examines various genocides from the past century, in particular focusing on the Armenian genocide of 1915 at the hands of the Turks. Movies like this are often powerful and disturbing, but difficult to get out to a wide audience. Screamers features the participation of System of a Down, who not only provide music, but also star in the film as well. It follows the personal story of lead singer Serj Tankian's 96 year old grandfather, who is one of the few Armenian survivors from his village in Turkey.

The term "Screamers" refers to political whistleblowers who speak out against governments who try to keep genocides under wraps.

Hope to see you there!

Peace,

cheryl

Well for those who don't know my friend Megan Gibson and I are trying to raise awarness and also collect donations for the genocide in Darfur, we are both really passionate about this and are trying our best to get the word out there.

well our next project that we have started working on is green arm bands, each day we wear the arm band to school, people are gonna know what they are for, when we tell them they have the choice to wear one as well, by the end of the month we are going to se how many kids are wearing an arm band.

I'll keep you posted on our progres
thanks

Four years and countless failed measures later there is still no resolution to the ongoing crisis in Darfur. An estimated 400,000 deaths have occurred, and over 2.5 million people have been displaced from their homes and are now refugees due to the genocide that exists in the western region of Sudan, Darfur.
As the leader of this nation, President Bush has done a superb job up to this point. Among the world leaders today President Bush leads all in assistance and awareness of the ongoing crisis in Darfur. But, as the leader of the most powerful country in the world and strongest influence to the United Nations, the job of ending the crisis weighs heaviest on Bush and us as Americans.
As an American I am embarrassed that we have allowed this atrocity of humanity to happen and to continue. Over the past four years nothing but hot air has reached the region of Darfur and the country of Sudan. We have allowed the political intricacies to slow our path to a resolution. Our diplomacy has successfully paralyzed us to the point that four years later, the Janjaweed a Sudanese government supplied guerilla group still strike fear in the hearts of every soul left in Darfur.
It was over 70 years ago that Hitler predicted the West's lack of resolve and it is four years later that his foresight remains the evident truth. In 1933 while persuading his associates that a Jewish holocaust would be tolerated by the west stated... "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"
The subject of genocide is one that reveals scars on the human race. Just in the last century there has been 7 different examples of genocide. In 1915, 1.5 million Armenians were killed wiping out approximately 4/5 of the Armenian population. In 1932 7 million Ukrainians were starved to death. In 1937 300,000 Chinese were killed at the hands of the Japanese. In 1938, 6 millions Jews were obliterated at the hands of the Nazi's. In 1975, 2 million Cambodians. In 1992, 200,000 Bosnians. In 1994, 400,000 Tutsis in Rwanda. And now as of 2003 400,000 Darfurians are dead and the count continues to grow.
History shows that genocide is an act that the international community has grown to accept. Yet, it considered one of humanities biggest downfalls and has never been morally acceptable. 7 examples in the last 100 years, four of which have occurred during our lifetimes. Where is our resolve? Where is our dignity? We have allowed Hitler like ideologies to trample our dignity and resolve for hundreds of years. And the reason for this is because they know they can do it. Barack Obama was recently asked about Darfur, he said, "We have a moral obligation as the most powerful nation on earth. When you see genocide whether it is in Rwanda, Bosnia or in Darfur it is a stain on all of us it is a stain on our souls."
We as American's should not pile the responsibility of ending the genocide solely on the U.N. The U.N. has specific problems with ending the genocide in Darfur. The biggest problem is that of the five permanent members to the U.N. Security Council, two of them are China and Russia. China and Russia have stalled measures in the past and their commitment to ending this crisis is questionable. Their motives in helping Sudan is that they depend on Sudan for a bulk of their oil. This is a two way sword, not only is China and Russia stalling the movement to end the genocide, but over 70% of Sudan's revenue produced from exporting oil is used on military spending, military spending that in all likelihood is going toward those committing the very atrocities that I speak of.
By now you might be saying to yourself. What have we done? What are we doing to help? Like I said, the U.S. and President Bush have gone to great lengths to see to it that the 2.5 million refugees are taken care of. The problem with this though is that humanitarian aid does not get to the root of the problem. I just recently read an account of a Darfuri refugee. She said, "I've been raped by members of the Janjaweed five times." She also said that members of the Janjaweed are split into three groups, each with a specific mission. There's a group whose sole mission is to rape. One whose mission is to murder. And the other's mission is arson.
Another example, Daoud Hari a 33 year old woman from a Darfurian village called Musbat has "Two daughters, one was nine years old. The daughters were captured by the government to be raped. They were returned to their family who were happy and crying at the same time because their daughters were alive, but they were bleeding and couldn't walk because they had been raped," she said. "The women said 20 men would come to rape them every day."
As the leaders of this great country, we can all give ourselves a pat on the back for aiding those in need. But it is not acceptable to me that Ms. Hari can do nothing but cry as day in and day out she had to give up her nine year old daughter for the sexual indecencies that I cannot even imagine. The light in this woman's day is when her nine year old comes back to her, because that is all she can ask for. We know this has happened (pause) we know this is still going on.
It is all going to be ok though, on June 30, 2005 The Darfur Peace and Accountability Act was introduced to Congress. This bill was too strict for us so first it was reformed and then passed after 15 plus months on October 13, 2006. This bill imposes sanctions against the officials the president identifies as responsible for the genocide and urges the president to deny entry to US ports from any ships engaged in business in Sudan's oil sector.
Over the last two years 17 pieces of legislation have been proposed to congress, some of them have passed others were too harsh. The most recent one is The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act. If passed individual states and U.S. companies will be able to divest from foreign companies and countries that deal directly with Sudan. An example would be if Matel decided that it did not want China to make its Barbie dolls anymore until China breaks its ties with Sudan.
So again, let us give ourselves a round of applause for passing the necessary legislation that will eventually lead to the end of this crisis. To me this is embarrassing, first off it takes over one year to pass a proposal that has led to no change. Secondly, who in their right minds thinks China is going to sacrifice its booming economy for the lives of Darfurians. I agree that this will help America feel like we have done something. Now individuals can picket companies like Matel. Lets let American's feel like they have made a difference. How superficial, of us to think that who makes our Barbie dolls is going to have any impact on what is actually happening in Darfur.
Is this what we are all about, are we going to look back in ten years and say. We did all we could, 1 million Darfurians died, but at least China is no longer making our Barbie Dolls. It is time to wake up, it is time that American complacency and lack of resolve to come to an end. What is happening in Darfur is a betrayal of our common values, it threatens our moral leadership and it paves the way for future genocides to go on unattested.
As American's we should be embarrassed that we have allowed this to not only happen, but continue. I am not satisfied, nothing short of stopping the bloodshed and allowing the 2.5 million refugees to safely return to their homes should be the only resolution. It is with a heavy heart that I believe we will allow this to continue, when it is all over we will say "Never Again." But "Never Again" has been used before, "Never Again" is becoming again, again and again. In the day that we live in today if you do not know anything about Darfur then it is because chose not too. We live in a day where there is no excuse for this kind of ignorance, no excuse for this choice. It is our responsibility as a government, it is our responsibility as a free citizens, and our responsibility as human beings. As the strongest and most capable country in the world we have the ability to end this genocide all we lack is the resolve. Let us for once prove Hitler wrong and strike down those who seek the injustices that are occurring daily in Darfur. Let us not allow the political intricacies to slow the wave of change to ending one of our modern eras worst atrocities. Let us as Americans work for a quick and absolute resolution to a cause worth saving.
Hey!

We are organizing an art walk for Darfur and are looking for submissions from students and community members. The theme is: "My Dream for Darfur." We would love to get numerous works from students and local artists. It will be showing in Central Oregon (Bend, and maybe other towns if we can organize it!).

The art walk will take place the first part of November, and we will be accepting pieces through mid to late October.

You can help by creating and submitting a piece, or by telling your friends, family, peers, teachers and school about it!

If you would like to know more, please contact me!

Patricia Parker, chairman and founder of Kids for Kids – an international charity based in England that has been working to sustain the villages of Darfur for over 5 years now - will be in Oregon and California from May 29 - June 9.  Patricia speaks to groups of all sorts in the UK, from grade schools to the House of Lords; she is coming to the US to help spread awareness here.

Her charity, Kids for Kids, is virtually the only organization to have brought help to children still living in villages in Darfur during the last five years. Aid from the international community has been concentrated on the IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps, and yet there are over 3½ million people still clinging to their homes as the violence has continued.  Kids for Kids does not believe in charity, and nor do people want it. What they want to do is to be able to look after their own children, themselves – the same as any parents anywhere in the world.

To learn more about Patricia check out her Bio and recent press, including the London Times article about her 2005 kidnapping by SLA rebels at www.yhtak.com/kids

I am coordinating Patricia's "Kids for Kids US Tour."  If you are interested in meeting Patricia and having her speak to your group/school/club/giving circle/etc please let me know:  k4k@yhtak.com.  Of course, she does NOT charge a speaking fee.

Thank you,

Kathy

Hello friends and activists!

I've come across a bit of a glitch in this wonderful system, that will not allow me to reply to emails or to send messages to anyone who wrote me. The only way is if you have first made me a "friend" in your settings.

So, if you emailed me, hoping to hear back from me, thanks for your patience, and PLEASE SEND ME A MESSAGE AGAIN with your email address included. OR, you can email me personally at: sjstark@gmail.com

The other option would be to add me to your friends through the Communities United to Save Darfur website.

Some of you have sent really important messages that I would love to respond to!

best,
sarah
Dear Friends,

In just a couple of weeks, the international community will be showing its support for Darfur by engaging in the Weekend of Prayer for Darfur.

The Portland and NW Oregon area was chosen as one of a handful of areas to focus on during this time of faith and activism, and because this matter is very important to me, I am doing my best to contact every faith group that I can.

I am asking you to stand with us this December, joining diverse communities of faith, to protect the people of Darfur and call for an end to genocide in Sudan. Let's send a message to the world that we will not stand idly by and watch the death of our brothers and sisters.

On the weekend of December 8, 9 and 10 we need you to call on your faith community to include a prayer for Darfur in weekly services. Save Darfur Coalition has offered to deliver to your house of worship a "Call to Conscience" banner for display during the Weekend of Prayer for Darfur.

Sign-up for your banner and support material at:
Link

You can get a packet of information to help plan your prayer event at: www.savedarfur.org/faith

December 10, 2006 is International Human Rights Day. All communities of faith are united in recognizing universal human rights. The Weekend of Prayer for Darfur is timed to coincide with International Human Rights Day.

Hundreds of churches, synagogues and mosques around the country are displaying banners. Each banner helps to raise awareness and can create another activist working to protect the people of Darfur.

Please join thousands of other communities of faith on December 8, 9 and 10.
The people of Darfur need your prayers. Your efforts will also be heard here at home, where our national leaders must be reminded that the people of Darfur need them to take action today.

Thank you for being a committed Darfur activist. Your continuing efforts deliver hope and save lives. Please help the effort by spreading the word! Please tell other faith groups in your neighborhood or that you know.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me by phone or email.
Sincerely,

sarah stark

We need volunteers who will help plan two major art events to raise awareness of genocide.

The first is an art show for First Thursday in March, and it will be at the City Hall. The art show will showcase stories of survival and raise local voices against genocide.

If you are interested in helping out, come to our planning meeting on at 7 pm on December 4th at The Urban Grind Coffehouse located on the corner of NW 14th & Johnson.

If you are unable to make the meeting, but are interested in helping out, please email me at: sjstark@gmail.com or email Nickole Cheron at: nlcheron@pdx.edu

The other event that we need volunteers to help plan and coordinate is a musical performance by Canadian-Armenian musician Mariam Matossian and other local artists. The performance will be the end of Genocide Awareness Week, sometime between the 19-24 of April.

If you would like to help plan this event, please email me at: sjstark@gmail.com

Thank you for your help!!

As you may already know, the national weekend of prayer for Darfur is being planned for December 8,9 & 10. Portland has been selected as one of a handful of cities that Save Darfur will focus on for this weekend.

It will take all of us to rally our personal or local places of faith to make it successful!!! The process is relatively easy, but the message it sends will be massive.

For more information, go to the Save Darfur website at:

Link

Or, you can email me at: sjstark@gmail.com

Tell as many places of faith as you can! Let's send the message to everyone that Oregon and the Portland area care!

message:
Hi, Sarah. I'm a software engineer from Seattle, and I've created a
web site to raise money for Darfur: http://darfurwall.org. The site is
tiled with the numbers 1 to 400,000, representing deaths in Darfur.
Each $1 donation lights a number. I thought you might share this with
your group as a fast, easy way to support peace in Darfur.

Thanks and keep up the good work,

Jonah

Volunteer opportunity!
We have the opportunities to table at the Lost Boys screenings, and unfortunately I will not be back in time to make it to help out. Is anybody else willing and available to do this? It would be great to have at least two people each night.

We will have information about the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness, how to get involved to save Darfur, and information about other upcoming events.

Here is the info:
The screenings will be November 7 and 8, 2006. The November 7th screening will be at the Hollywood Theater on NE Sandy and the November 8th screening will be at PCC Cascade Campus in North Portland. The screenings will begin at 6:15 p.m. and we would like to have our community partners arrive at 5:30 p.m. I still need to confirm what time the doors will open (I think it's 30 minutes prior to the show). More information about the film may be found at www.LostBoysFilm.com and Link.

If you are interested, please email me at: sjstark@gmail.com
Thanks!!!
