The Greater Cincinnati Advocates for Darfur is a diverse coalition of religious and secular organizations that have come together to speak as one voice in order to help stop the genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan. We do this through raising awareness throughout the Cincinnati area about the situation in Darfur, organizing some fundraisers for relief efforts, and promoting opportunities for the citizens in Greater Cincinnati to raise their voices and call for a lasting peace in Darfur. The ceremony, sponsored by the 170 nonprofit and religious organizations of the Save Darfur Coalition, will feature the lighting of an Olympic torch that will be passed from hand to hand by survivors of genocides in Darfur, Rwanda, Cambodia, the Jewish Holocaust. As a member of Muslim Mothers against Violence from Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati and a co-chair of Greater Cincinnati advocates for Darfur we are determined to educate the people so no one can ever claim that they "didn't know what was happening in Darfur".
For those of you unfamiliar with the atrocities going on in Darfur today, let me summarize with one word: genocide. The UN has already declared the genocide in Darfur to be the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.
A campaign of terror against non Arab tribes has killed 400,000 men, women, and children. About 2.5 million people have been forced from their homes and face starvation, rape, and the constant threat of violence. The degree of violence against women especially is incomprehensible - Women and girls are raped on a daily basis when they try to collect firewood outside the camps.
Let us remember Rwanda by defending Darfur . We encourage you to join us in raising your voice to end the violence in Darfur . Condemn the "senseless loss of life" in Darfur . The people of Darfur need our help more than ever. They need protection now just to stay alive until peace comes to Darfur . If many of us take small steps, we can help make a difference for the people of Darfur . Please do your part and tell your elected leaders how important this issue is to you.
You can help bring attention to the neglected crises and to pressure governments and international organizations to take action to help and protect refugees, displaced people and other innocent victims of conflict. Now that the election is over, politicians must make ending the violence in Darfur a priority.
We are nearing the end of another year- another chance to fulfill our promise of "never again". But as 2007 approaches, I fear that there is little WILL to do more than make empty promises about preventing genocide. Let these people return back home. Let their families live another day. The people of Darfur are waiting for the promise my friends, the promise of "Never Again".
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. - Martin Luther King Jr.
